The government introduced the Pupil Premium Grant in April 2011. It has used pupils who are entitled to free school meals (FSM), looked after children and service children as indicators of need. They have provided a fixed amount of money for schools per pupil based on the number of pupils registered for FSM over a rolling six year period.
This grant, which is additional to main school funding, is seen by the government as the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable. Schools can decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils, within their responsibility.
The plans on how the school intend to use Pupil Premium money can be found here. We are the second year into a 3 year plan. The impact of the first year of spending can be found within this document.
